Cellular Phones : Potential Tools
Indian economy is growing at a fast pace. It has achieved the highest growth rate of 8% in last 60 years after independence and is projected to be amongst the developed nations by 2050. Although this growth rate is largely due to service and industrial sector but agriculture cannot be altogether ignored because the Indian economy is based on agriculture and it contributes about 18% to national GDP.
Inspite of this, Indian farmers are struggling hard for earning their livelihood. There are several causes behind this, and one major cause is the lack of timely information. Government is making many policies for farmers and development of agriculture sector. Inspite of this the target people – Indian farmers cannot utilize them as they are not aware of many of these policies made for them.
So today, there is a need to strengthen the information system. For this there is a need to explore the new tools of ICT. Already different ICT tools have been successfully used in various parts of the country. Yet another innovation which has a huge potential to overcome the present shortcomings is cellular phones. Cellular phones have various advantages over the existing ICT tools.
This paper will discuss briefly the problems of Indian farmers, their need for timely information to solve their problems, use of ICT in agriculture at present and how cellular phones can be used for development and providing timely information to the farmers.
