Paper A Review On Biomedical Waste Management
Urban solid waste has attracted the attention of town planners, environmental activists and civic administrators. Bio-Medical Waste generated from health care establishments is a relatively recent issue. Therefore their is lack of concern for some special sources of waste and its management.
Bio-Medical waste management is a special case of waste management wherein the hazards and risks multiply not just to the generators and operators but also affect the common people. The improper
management of bio-medical waste causes serious environmental problems in terms of air, water and land pollution. Waste generated primarily from health care establishments, including hospitals, nursing
homes, veterinary hospitals, clinics and general practitioners, dispensaries, blood banks, animal houses and research institutes is highly contagious.
Due to inflow of population there has been a tremendous increase in the number of health-care establishments, hospitals over the past decade in Bangalore city. The total number of hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and general practitioners in Bangalore is about 5000. There are about 500 other institutions which generate bio-medical waste. Waste quantification studies has been taken up and estimated that the waste generated from these health-care establishments is around 25 tones per day. A survey is conducted on existing policy matters and practices.
There is a lot of confusion and problems among the generators, operators, decision-makers and the general community about the safe management of bio-medical waste. The reason may be lack of awareness. Hence this study attempts to target all the above mentioned groups.
