Paper Crime News Reporter And Decision Making Process
This paper (being part of a current PhD thesis) is an empirical and conceptual discussion which focuses on issues in crime reporting and will garner some thought on the concern for quality journalists in Malaysia for the future.
The study of ethics in news reporting has long been an integral part of journalism. As much as there is a great need to understand the proper sense of responsibility to the public on the part of the newspaper writer, ethics is a requirement for human life. The challenge for modern journalism and especially crime reporters/journalists is to find a way to negotiate the often competing professional, commercial and ethical considerations involved in finding and representing news, while adhering to a perception of journalism as playing an important role in society.
The study will discuss the use of an adapted version of Rest’s Model of Moral Judgement in deciphering the incorporation of ethics in the areas concerned. The findings will hopefully contribute to the importance of making ethical decisions and proposes a restructure in the Malaysian journalism code of ethics.
